Your wedding day is a big deal. You’ll go through a range of emotions, from anxiousness and nervousness right through to celebration and tears of overwhelming joy. Throughout all of this, you want to be sure that you’re looking and feeling your best.

Wedding photographers hang out with makeup artists when the bride and bridesmaids get ready and see first-hand the difference that a top-notch beauty regime can make to your wedding photos on the day.

We caught up with the expert team at Duüet Wedding Photography and Video who shared the tips they picked up from the crème de la crème of wedding makup artists so you can look your best on your special day.

Trial

The importance of testing your makeup before your wedding day is imperative according to any makeup artist. If you aren’t used to wearing a lot of makeup, and plan to on your big day, you need to prepare some time before and get used to the feeling. You’ll only be able to assess how you look and feel through trying out your makeup look. There’ll be too much going on to have a makeup panic hours before your wedding.

If you’re worried your eyebrows are a little darker than usual – don’t stress! Flash photography tends to wash out your natural skin colour and tones.

Wear a white t-shirt for the trial and get some photos in natural light as well as flash to see whether the makeup is coming through on camera. Don’t forget to bring along jewellery and any other extras you may be wearing that might affect your makeup look.

The most important thing is to determine how you are feeling. If you feel at all uncomfortable, tell your makeup artist and seek a solution. It’s all about your happiness and comfort.

Prepare

Flawless makeup is about more than the makeup artist themselves. It’s just as important to have a good ‘canvas’. Having a good skincare routine including an exfoliating process at least once a week is essential! If you wear makeup every day, perhaps a professional microdermabrasion treatment is something you should seek to do once a month leading up to the wedding.

An oxygen facial at least 2 – 5 days prior to the wedding date is a great idea. The oxygen facial hydrates, plumps, brightens and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

Avoid Late Treatments

Don’t go for treatments the day before the wedding. It’s a common mistake and a vital element to remember for your perfect wedding look. All your pampering including facials, waxing, lash extensions and spray tans should be done at least 72 hours before the big day. This avoids any potential flare ups that to surprise you on your wedding day.

Beauty Emergency Kit

Between the time your makeup artist leaves and your touch up in the evening, have a beauty emergency kit ready to go! This kit can include a face powder, small sponge, clear nail polish, lipstick/gloss, oil blotters, tweezers, safety pins, hair pins, band aids, eye drops, tampons and a small mirror.

Keep Hydrated and Rest Up

In the lead up to the special day keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water. Get a good night’s sleep the day before the wedding too. It’s tempting to stay up late drinking champagne with your bridal party, but this is very dehydrating on your skin.
